IDEAL WORLD MAKING HIS MARK AS A STALLION OF NOTE

By | Ideal World | No Comments

Ideal World is making his mark as a successful stallion in South Africa. He is by Kingmambo, a champion three-year-old in Europe who won five races from 1200m to 1600m. He won three G1 races at two and three. Ideal World won four times at three and four.

Two of the wins were in listed races in France. He won over distances from 1950m to 2500m. His most notable progeny has to be Smart Call who won the Grade 1 Woolavington at Durban’s Greyville Race Course at the end of May last year.

FRIDAY FEATURE RACE DOUBLE FOR IDEAL WORLD

By | Ideal World | No Comments

Mauritzfontein’s increasingly successful resident stallion Ideal World had another day to remember on Good Friday when his progeny won a pair of feature races at Fairview.

Ideal World’s five-year-old daughter Onesie became her sire’s 20th individual stakes winner when she defied her starting price to win the Listed Glenlair Trophy by one and a half lengths.

Trained by her part-owner Jacques Strydom, the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred Onesie received a shrewd ride from jockey Greg Cheyne, who did well to get his mount to overcome a muddling pace and pick up the first feature race of her career.

A DIAMOND IN THE DESERT

By | Ideal World | No Comments

Mauritzfontein’s handsome Ideal World recently produced his third Gr1 winner in South Africa when Samurai Warrior won the SA Derby. It reinforced his reputation as a serious sire of classic horses. A R50 000 graduate off the CTS Select Yearling Sale, he has earned over R1,3-million in stakes.

Ideal World has gone about setting a few precedents in South Africa at stud. He produced not only exported Hermoso Mundo, who became the only horse in South Africa to secure all of the major staying feature races in the country in a single season, but his are the bragging rights as sire to two Gr1 Met winners thus far – the superb race-mare Smart Call and Rainbow Bridge, both bred by Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift in partnership.

PROMINENT SOUTH AFRICAN SIRE FORT WOOD DIES

By | Fort Wood | No Comments

Fort Wood, one of South Africa’s most successful sires of the past two decades, has died. The son of Sadler’s Wells was 25 and had been active at Mauritzfontein Stud until his death.

A superbly bred horse, Fort Wood was one of four G1 winners produced by the great broodmare Fall Aspen, a G1 winner who was also the dam of 1995 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner and sire Timber Country.

She also produced the French group winner Colorado Dancer who is the dam of 2000 Dubai World Cup winner and sire, Dubai Millennium

Bred in Kentucky by Hullin Co. NV, Fort Wood lived up to his pedigree on the racetrack, winning three of his six outings in Europe when racing for Sheikh Mohammed. Fort Wood’s victories included a memorable score in the 1993 Grand Prix de Paris, in which the vanquished included multiple G1 winner Bigstone and Siam, who is a full brother to US, French and English champion, Miesque.

A TRUE SOUTH AFRICAN LEGEND

By | Fort Wood | No Comments

The recent passing of Mauritzfontein’s outstanding sire, Fort Wood, marked the end of an era. Fort Wood, whose first foals were born in 1995, was 25 at the time of his death, and he built a reputation as an outstanding classic sire, top-class sire of sires and champion broodmare sire.

By far the most successful son of 14 times GB/Ire champion sire, Sadler’s Wells, ever to stand at stud in South Africa, Fort Wood was one of four G1 winners produced by Pretense mare Fall Aspen. Winner of the Gr1 Matron Stakes, Fall Aspen was an outstanding broodmare whose nine individual stakes winners included four G1 winners.

LEGEND OF THE FALL

By | Fort Wood | No Comments

In South Africa, Fall Aspen’s deceased champion sire son, Fort Wood, continues to make his presence felt through successful sire sons, Dynasty and Elusive Fort, promising grandson, Jackson, and a host of outstanding broodmare daughters.

Perennially among South Africa’s top stallions, Dynasty, one of three sons of his sire named Horse of the Year, made headlines again this weekend when his son, American Landing, won Saturday’s Listed East Cape Derby at Fairview.

DANON PLATINA BEATS TOP FIELD IS ASAHI FUTURITY STAKES

By | Danon Platina

Race favourite Danon Platina responded well to expectations in capturing this year’s Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. His three career starts include a runner-up finish in his debut start, followed by a convincing four-length win in a maiden race in October, and another strong three-length victory in the Begonia Sho, an allowance race seven weeks later.

Since the Victoria Mile triumph with Apapane in 2011, this win marks trainer Sakae Kunieda’s 11th JRA-G1 victory, while jockey Masayoshi Ebina celebrates his 23rd JRA-G1 title after claiming the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies partnered with Shonan Adela, also sired by Deep Impact, just a week ago. Deep Impact offspring has now dominated ten out of 23 JRA-G1 races this year.

DANON PLATINA TO STAND IN SOUTH AFRICA

By | Danon Platina

The superbly bred and well-performed Danon Platina will become the first son of the legendary racehorse and sire, Deep Impact, to take up stud duties in South Africa when he retires to Mauritzfontein for 2019. Danon Platina was Japan’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2014 when the striking grey won three of his four races.

He scored his most notable win at two in the G1 Asahi Futurity Stakes, scoring three parts of a length win over an 18 horse field – with third-place finisher, Clarity Sky, going on to win the G1 NHK Mile Cup the following year.

DANON PLATINA WILL MAKE A DEEP IMPACT

By | Danon Platina | No Comments

The imported grey stallion, Danon Platina (JPN), has moved in at Mauritzfontein alongside the stalwart Ideal World, and I remind myself to note in my review that he’d have to travel a long way to find a nicer, more immaculate place to sprinkle his precious seed.

Danon Platina was purchased off the racetrack in Japan by Mauritzfontein, Wilgerbosdrift, Moutonshoek and Ridgemont Highlands in a deal structured by Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock. He’s a young grey horse, only six years of age.
